“Moka Pot!” — A Group Exhibition That Brews Art

Earlier this year, a friend painted a Moka Pot. I shared it with another friend, and she instantly remarked that it reminded her of Caspar David Friedrich’s Wanderer Above the Sea of Fog—that iconic figure gazing dramatically into a cloud-filled valley. Her comparison was too irresistible. I had to paint the Moka Pot version.

And I didn’t stop there.

Amused by the result, I dove headlong into replacing figures in famous paintings with a Moka Pot. The series includes six reimagined classics: Monet’s Woman with a Parasol, Friedrich’s Wanderer, Picasso’s The Old Guitarist, Botticelli’s Birth of Venus, Munch’s The Scream, and Van Gogh’s Starry Night. It began as a joke, but like any good cup of coffee, it quickly turned into a bold idea for a full exhibition.

I shared the concept with my friends, and to my delight, everyone jumped onboard—one of them even roped in a poet. Now, twelve artists have brewed their own takes on the beloved stovetop icon, each interpreting the Moka Pot in a style uniquely theirs.

Expect Cheryl Busick’s whimsical Godzilla Moka Pot rampaging across wild landscapes of imagination. Expect neon explosions, muted reveries, traditional brushwork, and unhinged contemporary splashes. Expect surprises.

The results are as varied and caffeinated as the artists themselves.

If you are a coffee snob, an art enthusiast, or someone who enjoys a visual wink, Moka Pot! opens Saturday, July 12th, from 5–7pm, and runs through September 13th. Come join us.
