About Yuri Ozaki

Yuri Ozaki grew up in a small town in Mie Prefecture on the Kii Peninsula of Japan. The area is known for its unique wet climate and mystical history. This area also features UNESCO World Heritage registered sacred sites and pilgrimage routes. The beauty and mystery of her home region has been a strong influence on Ozaki’s work. Her favorite subjects have been woodland scenes in the Tennessee Valley as well as her coastal hometown in Japan. Most recently, she has been experimenting with her own imaginary world based on scenes of decay and renewal in nature. She feels connected to her subjects through the texture of watercolor on paper. She is a signature member of the Watercolor Society of Alabama, Mississippi Watercolor Society, Montana Watercolor Society and North East Watercolor Society.

Downtown Huntsville
Watercolor 14″x10″

This watercolor painting of North Side Square in Downtown Huntsville is one of several I have done from the same reference photo. I was consumed with rainy Downtown scenes a few years ago, and went there whenever it rained. Light playing on the wet brick sidewalk was captivating and provided an intriguing technical and interpretive challenge. The first painting I did from the photo was almost photo realistic. I was not very happy with it and kept painting in different color palettes and paint strokes to create more atmosphere and to experiment with my own perception of the raw visual information in the photo. This is probably the most fluid among all of the paintings.
